Art Opening by Lauren Schunk

Lauren was reinvigorated to paint after teaching a landscape architecture studio that traveled to significant landscapes throughout the western US. Her work is motivated by the premise of the class: that drawing and painting can be tools to study the unique character of a landscape. Lauren uses watercolors and oil paints to capture dramatic perspectives and the vast scale of the remote landscapes she visited while teaching, including impressive parks such as Badlands National Park, Custer State Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Outside of painting, Lauren is a designer at a landscape architecture firm in Boston. She spends her weekends exploring her newfound love of rock climbing and volunteering with the cats at the MSPCA. Lauren is a native of Massachusetts and has recently returned to Boston after living in Iowa and Texas.

Cask Sunday in the Taproom
Apr

12:00 PM12:00

Cask Sunday in the Taproom

For hundreds of years the method for the transport and serving of beer was the humble cask--the step between clay jugs and the modern keg. They were originally made from wood with iron bands and are now stainless steel, just like modern draft kegs. Cask Ale (or Real Ale, as it is called throughout most of the British Isles, where it is still the predominant form of beer) is served at a slightly lower carbonation and slightly higher temperature than draft beer, which allows for a different flavors to come forward that are typically more muted with the colder, fizzier draft.

Join us in our Taproom as we tap 3 styles of cask beer- Nik's Bitter, JP Porter, and Fine. A Sour Beer. We will tap one at a time- get there early to try the first, stay to try all 3! We typically have the same beers on draft that we do on cask--Ask your bartender for a pint of each to compare! After all: A fine beer may be judged with only one sip...but it's better to be thoroughly sure. -Czech Proverb

Art Opening by Catherine Weinfield

From Catherine: [This] show is the beginning of a project to illustrate one type of vegetable for every letter of the alphabet. Presented in bold colors and simple lines, I seek to personify each vegetable family in various off-the-wall, whimsical, or humorous ways. It is my own response to our shared and diverse humanity, especially in the divisive era we are live in and experience today. Every single human being can appreciate humor, and the integral feelings that make us all the same – joy, surprise, love, anger, contentment, jealousy etc., are what I attempt to portray in my illustrations. I also look to highlight the magic that lives beneath the surface of our everyday lives; a magic that knows no boundary of age, race, religion, or sex. For example, watercress is nice enough in a soup or a salad, but how about a bunch of watercress who don goggles and nose-plugs and start a swim team?

Each original illustration is drawn in colored pencil and ink. Presented here are signed and numbered prints of each original image.

Dungeons & Dragons for First Time Players (TSB Taproom)

Growing up, all the cool kids played D&D. They wore letterman jackets, got out of class early on game days and had outrageously steamy dating lives. All the while, you were forced to watch from the outside, wishing you were as cool as them. No? That wasn't how your high school worked? Fine, but it's still possible that you always thought the game might be fun, but never wanted to sign on for a three-month campaign, filled with six-hour sessions of rolling dice to figure out your dexterity or whatever. You just wanted to try it out. Well, March 25th, you can join us at Turtle Swamp Brewing in Jamaica Plain to do exactly that.

Boardgame Empire is running a Dungeons & Dragons for First Time Players night. Our Dungeon Master Extraordinaire has premade characters and scenarios so you don't have to worry about that part. We'll do a quick 5- or 10-minute explanation of how the game works, and then you'll jump in and start playing. Wanna have a brew while you play? You're definitely encouraged to have a pint while you play!
