Dungeons & Dragons for First Time Players (TSB Taproom)

Dungeons & Dragons for First Time Players (TSB Taproom)

Growing up, all the cool kids played D&D. They wore letterman jackets, got out of class early on game days and had outrageously steamy dating lives. All the while, you were forced to watch from the outside, wishing you were as cool as them. No? That wasn't how your high school worked? Fine, but it's still possible that you always thought the game might be fun, but never wanted to sign on for a three-month campaign, filled with six-hour sessions of rolling dice to figure out your dexterity or whatever. You just wanted to try it out. Well, on May 22nd, you can join us at Turtle Swamp Brewing in Jamaica Plain to do exactly that.

We're running our popular Dungeons & Dragons for First Time Players night again- this time with more sessions available for everyone who wants to get in on this. Our Dungeon Master Extraordinaire has premade characters and scenarios so you don't have to worry about that part. We'll do a quick 5- or 10-minute explanation of how the game works, and then you'll jump in and start playing. Wanna have a brew while you play? Good news, Turtle Swamp serves some of the best beer in the land, and you're definitely encouraged to have a pint while you play.

For Crying Out Loud! An Art Opening by Dawn Nelson

For Crying Out Loud! An Art Opening by Dawn Nelson

This work, completed over the past decade or so, includes primarily large-scale abstract oil paintings on loose sheets of canvas. This is rather loud work. Given the current state of the world, it seems to Dawn that an appropriate response is “For Crying Out Loud”. The paintings reflect her personal and emotional response to her journeys.

Because, more recently, much of her work has centered around her studio in North Adams, this exhibit turns out to be the first time in the past decade, beyond JPOS, that Dawn’s work has been shown at home in Jamaica Plain. She is very excited to bring her work back home, and hopes that you like it!

Art Opening by Lauren Schunk

Lauren was reinvigorated to paint after teaching a landscape architecture studio that traveled to significant landscapes throughout the western US. Her work is motivated by the premise of the class: that drawing and painting can be tools to study the unique character of a landscape. Lauren uses watercolors and oil paints to capture dramatic perspectives and the vast scale of the remote landscapes she visited while teaching, including impressive parks such as Badlands National Park, Custer State Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Outside of painting, Lauren is a designer at a landscape architecture firm in Boston. She spends her weekends exploring her newfound love of rock climbing and volunteering with the cats at the MSPCA. Lauren is a native of Massachusetts and has recently returned to Boston after living in Iowa and Texas.
